Rape accused TV presenter Jub Jub back in court in November

Television presenter and musician Jub Jub’s case has been postponed to November 8 for further investigation and consultation.

He appeared briefly in the Johannesburg magistrate’s court on Thursday morning following his arrest on charges of rape, assault and attempted murder in July.

The Uyajola 99 host, born Molemo Maarohanye, is out on R10 000 which was granted in his previous court appearance.

Maarohanye faces 13 counts ranging from rape, indecent assault, kidnapping, assault, and assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

One of the charges was opened by his ex-girlfriend and a famous media personality. The incident dates back to 2006 and 2009 when they were in a relationship.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwana confirmed that the state has disclosed the contents of the docket and that it is ready for trial.

“The defence was given an opportunity to respond and their response was that they wanted to study the contents of the docket and decide if they wanted to proceed with trial or they first want to exhaust mechanisms available to them, one of which being lodging representations,” said Mjonondwana.

The charges emanate from the comments that the artist made in a podcast in 2021.

Responding to Maarohanye’s comments on the show, the complainant accused him of raping and physically abusing her while they were dating.

“There are two other complainants in the matter, also from the entertainment industry, a singer and a radio presenter,” said Mjonondwana.

“We have placed the matter on the roll because the docket passed the test of prospects of a successful prosecution.”

Maarohanye’s lawyer Ntsako Baloyi, who requested a lengthy postponement, said: “We believe that by the time we come back, all avenues would have been exhausted and we will keep in touch with the state.

“I’m assuring the court that when we return we will proceed.”
