SABC radio stations poised to rake in millions from maskandi

At least two public radio stations, UKhozi FM and Umhlobo Wenene FM, will rake in millions of rands from the song of the year competition.

UKhozi FM’s competition is called Ingoma Ehlukanisa uNyaka and Umhlobo Wenene FM’s, Ingoma Yonyaka.

It is public knowledge that UKhozi FM has been making millions of rands from its competition while the artists, including the winner receive nothing.

Things might be slightly different this year since the two stations are fishing in one pond.

SK and Khuzani Mpungose go toe-to-toe for the bragging rights

This year the cash-strapped SABC has cleverly pitted two maskandi rivals against each other. Mthandeni ‘SK’ Manqele and Khuzani Mpungose vie for the Umhlobo Wenene FM song of the year.

Manqele and Mpungose enjoy a huge following and their fans will vote in huge numbers.

For the fans, the competition is less about song quality and more about loyalty to these two and proving who is king of maskandi.

Maskandi is the flavour of the month at the two stations

Currently, songs by three maskandi artists – Manqele, Malibongwe ‘Mjolisi’ Gwala and Mpungose – top the charts at the two radio stations.

This week on UKhozi FM, Manqele’s song, Gucci, was sitting at number one followed by Gwala’s My Dululu.

Mpungose’s song, Imbongolo, claimed top spot on Umhlobo Wenene followed by Lindo Mtangayi’s Kuvele Kukhanye.

But Gwala might have the upper hand on Manqele Ukhozi FM competition.

Mpungose and Mtangayi are neck and neck to the finish line

As for Ingoma Yonyaka on Umhlobo Wenene FM, anything is possible because Mpungose and Mtangayi are neck and neck, both sitting at 24 percent.

And the listeners have started making their voice heard on social media.

Luyolo said: “Lindo you’re very close. Let’s push and remove Khuzani from number one.”

Umzukulu kaMathetha said: “The votes should have remained a secret. This is just wrong because this other one will vote for himself.”

Andisiwe Khuboni wrote: “Next week Ingoma G (My Dululu) will be number one and we don’t expect you to complain. You’ve been hogging the top spot for weeks already.”

Both stations will announce the winner at midnight on 31 December.
