A massive manhunt is under way for a group of heavily armed suspects who attacked police officers who were ferrying prisoners to court.
The suspects opened fire on the police van and freed six men in Makhado, Limpopo on Monday, according to a police report.
Colonel Nyelisani Mabatha, spokesperson for the police in Limpopo, said after freeing the awaiting trial prisoners, the group sped off in a grey Mercedes Benz and a white Toyota bakkie.
“The incident occurred along the Vivo Road next to the first Schoemansdal turnoff outside Louis Trichardt,” Mabatha said.
Mabatha said the escapees are from Zimbabwe and urged the public to alert the police when they cross paths with the men. They are Forward Shumba, Shingirai Nyandome, Brilliant Sibanda, Erick Sithole, Moses Zambara and Alex Nkomo.
Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the group can contact Mabatha on 082 565 8171, #CrimeStop number 08600 10111 or may send information via the #MySAPSApp.
