Senzo Meyiwa murder accused found guilty in drug case

Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, accused number one in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, has been convicted in a separate case involving drugs and ammunition.

Sibiya appeared in the Thembisa magistrate’s court for judgment on Tuesday. This after he was arrested in May 2020 and charged with dealing in drugs and the possession of ammunition.

The court heard that he was found in possession of drugs in the Vusimuzi section in Thembisa, east of Johannesburg.

Ammunition found at his house

When police raided Sibiya’s home, they found live ammunition in a plastic bag.

Previously, the Meyiwa trial heard that Sibiya was linked to the murder shortly after he was arrested and that he “willingly” confessed to killing the soccer star.

However, his lawyers argue that he and accused number two, Bongani Ntanzi, who is also said to have confessed, were assaulted and coerced into signing confessions.

During his separate trial, Sibiya denied being found in possession or dealing in drugs.

He argued that when he was arrested, the police did not find anything on him, contending that his incarceration was linked to the Meyiwa case which he was interrogated about.

Sibiya lied

Handing down the judgment on Tuesday, the magistrate found Sibiya’s version of the event to be false, stating that police officers who arrested him had nothing to do with Meyiwa’s murder investigations.

“The details the police gave were probable. The versions put forward by the accused did not add up,” said the magistrate.

Sibiya was concomitantly found guilty of possession of drugs but was acquitted in a charge for dealing in drugs.

He was also found guilty of possession of illegal ammunition.

He is due back in the Thembisa magistrate’s court on January 18 for sentencing, a few days before the resumption of the Meyiwa trial which will focus on the admissibility of his controversial confession statement.

Sibiya is already serving a 12-year sentence after he was sentenced in 2022 for attempted murder of two women.
