It was a week to remember for the children of Soweto when a former American football star Steve Jackson visited their schools.
Jackson’s visit, as the representative of the Jackson Family Foundation, was in collaboration with community engagement specialists Cora Consulting. The retired NFL player visited the Soweto schools to engage with the pupils, promote literacy and foster cultural exchange.
One of the schools on Jackson’s itinerary was Mbuyisa Makhubu Primary School in Orlando West. It is named after the 18-year-old who became famous for carrying the body of Hector Pietersen during the historic 1976 Soweto Uprising. The school is also adjacent to Hector Pietesen Memorial
Jackson joined the school kids for a soccer game, fostering camaraderie and promoting the importance of physical fitness.
Jackson also visited Orlando SDA Primary School, to donate books and engage in a reading session. The donated books, authored by American writer Lolanda Bunch-Cooper, can be found at adventuresoflo.com. These books captivate young readers by instilling a passion for travel, imagination and learning about a variety of cultures worldwide.
The Jackson Family Foundation is a philanthropic organisation devoted to promoting children’s literacy and education. Their mission is to advocate for literacy wherever they go in the world, emphasising the importance of reading and knowledge acquisition for young minds.
