Police have dismissed reports that Nthabiseng Nhlapo, the woman who was seen kicking her child in a viral video, has died by suicide.
Reports have been making rounds on social media that Nthabiseng Nhlapho took her life after her son was taken away from her due to the assault.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo poured cold water over the rumours about the woman’s death.
“Police don’t have a report of such a suicide. The investigation in the case of child abuse and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm is continuing,” said Mavela.
The child has been removed from Nthabiseng Nhlapo’s care and handed over to the provincial department of social development for placement.
“The mother appeared before the magistrate’s court in Johannesburg on Monday.
“She was released and the matter was not placed on the court roll as the SAPS [South African Police Service] was instructed to first collect both cellphones of both parents for further investigation.”
