Tshwane DA-led multiparty rejects motion of no confidence on Brink

The Tshwane multi-party coalition government is opposed to the African National Congress’ motion of no confidence in mayor Cilliers Brink.

The DA-led multiparty includes ActionSA, Freedom Front Plus, ACDP, IFP, and DOP.

Jacui Uys, joint caucus chairperson, said the ANC deflected their reason for the motion of no confidence when they claimed it was related to service delivery.

Uys said it was clear to them that the ANC only had business interest in waste collection contracts.

Call for other parties to support no-motion

“We will not allow the ANC to undo all the progress we’ve made in the name of self-interest. If the motion of no confidence serves on Thursday, we will be ready to vote it doesn’t … serve the people of Tshwane.

They called upon other political parties to join forces in ensuring that Brink remains in his position.

Brink said the motion of no confidence was motivated by new performance requirements on waste removal contracts.

He said the ANC wanted to maintain contracts that are aligned with them at Tshwane but do not meet the standards of the new requirements.

“It is very clear that this is the antithesis. The fight against the cleanup operation that we have in the capital city. And it is important to note that unless we do these things, unless we tighten performance requirements, unless we hold senior managers to the highest possible standards, we will not be able to improve service delivery,” said Brink.

He said Tshwane’s finances as well as service delivery have improved.

ANC accused of changing tunes on reasons for motion

The mayor said the ANC has changed its tune at least two times, about the reason for the motion of no confidence.

Initially, according to Brink, he was to leave the position due to failed service delivery. But the new statement highlights that there are senior officials that face disciplinary hearings under his municipality.

The mayor said he was not involved in disciplinary matters. However, he could back the city manager and his team during processes.

“[The motion of no confidence] wants to take Tshwane back to the days of looting. [To the days] of internal mismanagement of no consequences. Whereas this multiparty coalition government is taking the city forward. And it is building a capital city that can work for all its people,” said Brink.
