‘Carte Blanche’ presenter Derek Watts recovering from sepsis

Veteran journalist and Carte Blanche host Derek Watts is recovering and learning to walk again after he collapsed in Hoedspruit in March.

Watts collapsed after a suspected stroke and was rushed to the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg where he was admitted to the intensive care unit, he wrote on social media, sharing that he was later diagnosed with severe sepsis.

Sepsis occurs when chemicals released in the blood stream to fight an infection trigger inflammation throughout the body.

This can cause a cascade of changes that damage multiple organ systems, leading them to fail, sometimes even resulting in death.

The symptoms of sepsis include fever, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, fast heart rate and mental confusion. Treatment for the medical condition includes antibiotics and intravenous fluids.

The TV presenter thanked his fans for get-well messages, as well as the Carte Blanche team for filling in for him while he is still on the road to full recovery.

“Back home four days and now walking unsupported for short distances,” he wrote.
