DJ Sumbody’s business partner lays charges against ‘gang leader’

DJ Sumbody’s business partner Kagiso Setsetse has opened a criminal case against the alleged Cape Town 28s gang leader, Ralph Stanfield, for hijacking their Ayeyep in Cape Town.

Setsetse has also pressed criminal charges against Stanfield’s wife Nicole Johnson, her cousin Saadiq Peterson and the alleged gangster employee Warren Dennis.

The case was opened at the Brooklyn police station in Pretoria and was transferred to the Cape Town Central station for investigation. Setsetse alleges that on April 9, 2023 he and his wife, together with their two sons, travelled to Dubai intending to return to South Africa on April 20. He said he was scared to return to South Africa after allegedly receiving death threats from Stanfield on April 10.

“I did not take it lightly as I have heard horrifying stories about him, some of which he told me himself about. Losing my business partner in that dreadful manner created a lot of trauma and anxiety for my family and I. It is no secret that businessmen are not safe in our country,” he said.

Setsetse alleged he was introduced to Stanfield back in 2019 by DJ Sumbody, who was shot execution style in a hit in Joburg last year, as someone that would run their security when they opened Ayepyep.

He alleged that when he met Stanfield, he portrayed himself as a good family man who would ensure that their business in Cape Town was not attacked by gangsters. For that he demanded a protection fee.

He later brought a security company that would render security services for the joint. Afterwards, he alleged, Stanfield insisted that Johnson help them run the waterhole as they spent most of their time in Gauteng, where they lived.

The two paid Stanfield’s wife and the security company close to a total of half a million rand a month. After working with Johnson, he then allegedly
started to threaten them by forcing his way into the business and demanding shares.

He alleged when they declined, they believed he sent people to disturb the business operations until they succumbed to his demands. “We asked him to pay for the shares but he refused. He instructed us to issue his mother-in-law, Barbara Johnson, with a share certificate. We issued the share certificate but decided against it before we could sign or register it at the CIPC,” said Setsetse.

Setseste said over the months their encounters with Stanfield have been on and off as he would go from being pleasant and polite to threatening and cursing them. At times Stanfield would portray an image of them as a team and would take photos with them, and then out of nowhere he would antagonise them by sending them pictures of people being murdered.

“Early April, Stanfield threatened me and tried to shutdown Ayepyep Cape Town by sending his alleged gangster employee by the name of Warren Lee
Dennis. One of my managers pleaded with Lee and his wife not to close the business as there were customers already on the premises and artists where booked to perform.”

He alleged Johnson instructed Dennis to remove all the bank speed points from Ayepyep and replaced them with Peterson’s business speed points where all the funds due to the business where transferred to Peterson’s account.

Setsetse said when he spoke to Stanfield about going to the media, he told him he owned the Hawks and police, and there was nothing they could do to him.

Stanfield also mentioned that if he reported the matter to the Hawks his contacts would inform him and toss away the case.

In WhatsApp messages that we have seen, after Stanfield allegedly hijacked Ayepyep Cape Town, he told Setsetse that he would be coming to Johannesburg for two weeks. This was what made Setsetse extend his stay in Dubai.

Western Cape provincial police spokesperson Colonel Andree Traut said: “The office has established that the case was indeed registered at the Brooklyn police station in Gauteng, and it relates to a crime that was allegedly perpetrated in Cape Town. The case docket is en route to Cape Town.”

Stanfield was hostile when we approached him for comment. “Who gave you my number, let’s not start off like that, go back to the person that gave you my number so they can ask for permission from me to give you my number,” he said.

“Stanfield said he owns the Hawks and they will throw the case out.”
