The fairy tale marriage of television thespians Atandwa Kani and his wife Fikile Mthwalo has reached its final episode.
Sunday World can exclusively reveal that Mthwalo’s attorneys have informed Kani recently that she would file for divorce after the two, who separated around 2020, failed to iron out their differences and repair their floundering union.
This will be Kani’s second failed nuptial in less than 10 years.
The former Generations actor, wedded Mthwalo after acrimoniously dumping his first wife, Thembisa Mdoda, in one of the A-list divorces that became cannon fodders of tabloid papers in South Africa.
The disintegration of Kani’s and Mthwalo’s matrimony, which was registered on December 24, 2015, would be a blow to the talented actors’ loved ones as they had prayed and hoped that they rekindle their love and have children as husband and wife.
News that Kani and Mthwalo are heading for divorce was revealed by the former couple’s associates who were heartbroken by Mthwalo’s decision to file for divorce.
“We did not see it coming; we thought they would find a solution to their problems and get back together but we were clearly wrong,” said the associate, who did not want to be named for fear of compromising their relationship with the ex-item.
After their split, said the associate, Mthwalo went to live in Kyalami Hills, north of Joburg, while Kani, who is fondly known as “Prince of Theatre”, lived in Meredale, south of Joburg.
Despite their separation, the two estranged love birds, continued to speak in a desperate bid to resolve their problems but without success.
The associate said Mthwalo, who played Zak in Isidingo, told them that upon introspection, she decided to file for divorce because they were unable to resolve their differences.
The associate further said Mthwalo told them that she and Kani – the son of the doyen of theatre, John Kani – no longer shared the same ambitions and this has resulted in the loss of spark and affection they had harboured for each other before their separation.
Another associate, who also spoke anonymously, confirmed that the couple was heading for a divorce.
“Mthwalo told us that they have already signed a settlement agreement, which they will make a court order. It’s a fait accompli but who knows, maybe they could both change their minds before the matter goes to court,” said the associate.
Another associate also confirmed that the two had signed a settlement agreement.
“I have seen it. It doesn’t say much except to say that they have already shared their movable assets,” said the associate.
The associate further said when Mthwalo informed Kani that she would file for divorce, he told her that he would not oppose it.
“It is really not good for him, second divorce in less than 10 years. But he is still young and will hopefully find his soulmate,” said the associate.
Kani divorced Mdoda after accusing her of cheating on him after it was discovered through paternity tests that their twins were not sired by him. They were reportedly fathered by a pilot cuckolding him.
Mthwalo did not respond to written questions while Kani could not be reached for comment.
