After what was an eventful year of top-quality local and global sporting events in 2025, all the South African stars who stood out, including those who made a breakthrough, will be honoured at the 19th edition of the SA Sports Awards in Sun City tonight.
Last year, several SA stars featured at some of the biggest global competitions such as the ICC World Test Championship final at Lord’s, the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, and the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), among other showpieces.
Some of the headliners include 800m star Prudence Sekgodiso, Proteas captain Temba Bavuma, swimming sensation Pieter Coetze, top wheelchair tennis phenomenon Kgothatso Montjane, 100m legend Akani Simbine, Springbok Malcolm Marx, and boxing star Kevin Lerena.
Lerena, who is a former WBC bridgerweight champion, is nominated in the Sportsman of the Year category alongside Coetze and rising golf star Christiaan Maas.
Proteas Women captain Laura Wolvaardt, canoe champion Kira Bester and Sekgodiso will be contesting for the Sportswoman of the Year award.
Olympic cycling bronze medalist Alan Hatherly, Springbok star Pieter-Steph du Toit, alongside Simbine, are up for the Sportsman of the Year award.
There is also a category for the Team of the Year, with nominees including the SA men’s 4x100m relay team from the Paris Olympics, the Golf RSA Eisenhower team, and the Proteas Men’s Test team.
Rising South African stars will also be recognised, with Sekgodiso, Bayanda Walaza and boxer Siseko Teyisi pitted against each other in the Junior Sport Star of the Year.
It’s between Bavuma, Simbine and Marx for the big award of the night, the Sports Star of the Year.
