Following an impressive display against World Cup semi-finalists Morocco, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos singled out Percy Tau, amongst others, as one of the standout performers and finally got to witness his class in national team colors.
South Africa stunned 11th Fifa-ranked Morocco during their final Group K Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier match, beating them 2-1 in an almost fully packed FNB Stadium at the weekend.
Speaking to the media after the match, Broos said a performing Tau will be very important for Bafana heading into the Afcon next year.
“I have always said that a good Percy Tau is very important for Bafana Bafana,” Broos said.
“But Percy was not able to make those performance in the past, because he was not ready, he went from one injury to another, he didn’t play – how can you then have the rhythm of the game?
“And you can see he has now become a standard player for Al Ahly, he plays every game, and you see his performance and how important he is for us.
“So again, I am very happy, and I knew that if Percy played every game in his club, we would see the Percy Tau everyone knows – an important player, and he was very important for us. I have been here [South Africa] for almost two years and I finally saw the best of Percy Tau.”
Bafana surprisingly dominated a star-studded Moroccan side that had the likes of Achraf Hakimi, Youssef En-Nesyri, Noussair Mazraoui and Hakim Ziyech.
Having achieved everything that they were playing for on the day – tribute for the late legendary Clive Barker and winning back the trust of the nation, Broos and his men will now look to build up from that performance heading into the prestigious competition that they last won in 1996.
