Chiefs and Sundowns play to an intense goalless draw at a packed FNB

Despite the awkward day and unfriendly time selected by the league for a game of this magnitude, the 75 000 spectators from both teams showed up in what was yet another week of exhilarating football in the Betway Premiership.

Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns went pound for pound at the FNB Stadium on a vibrant Wednesday night, but the two sides could not be separated after playing to a goalless draw.

The result means that Amakhosi remain number two and are level on 10 points with Sekhukhune United, who also played a 1-1 draw against AmaZulu at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Sundowns, on the other hand, are right behind Chiefs in position three with eight points after four matches.

It must be said, the final result is not a reflection of how the game played out, as Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi’s side will feel like they dropped two big points, as they were the more dominant team on the night.

Even the Amakhosi faithful applauded and sang with the team after the final whistle, as they probably felt that their side left everything on the pitch and took the game to Sundowns from the first to the final whistle.

Credit must be given to the defending PSL champions, as they also held their own against a highly poised Chiefs side who are on red-hot form.

The visitors have not had the greatest of starts to their campaign and went into the game wounded after exiting the MTN8 at the hands of Orlando Pirates.

Now with the FIFA international break on the horizon, it will grant both teams and opportunity to go back on the drawing board and to pick up from where they left off.

After the initial 60,000 tickets, which were allocated for the game sold out like hot cakes, the Event Safety and Security Planning Committee of Stadium Management SA decided to authorize an increase in the number of tickets in capacity to 75,000.

It did not take long before the tickets would be sold out within hours before kick-off for the much-anticipated humdinger.
