Mamelodi Sundowns and Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Andile Dlamini says they will be equal to the task to overcome their tough Group G challenge at the 2023 Fifa World Cup.
South Africa were pitted against formidable opponents Sweden, Argentina, and Italy. They will begin their World Cup campaign against the Swedes at the Wellington Regional Stadium on Sunday.
Dlamini believes the reigning Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) champions were drawn in a group that will present them with an exciting challenge and will do whatever it takes to make history at the tournament and record their first World Cup victory.
“While we acknowledge the experience gained four years ago, this year’s edition presents a different kind of challenge,” Dlamini told Sundowns media.
“There are different hosting countries this time around and the teams in our group are also different. We understand that each tournament has its challenges and opportunities, and we are prepared to adapt and overcome whatever obstacles come our way.
“Our commitment to success remains unwavering and we are ready to give our all-in pursuit of our goals.”
The shot-stopper also revealed her all-time favourite World Cup heroin that inspired her the most throughout her football career.
“I have always admired and drawn inspiration from former American goalkeeper Hope Solo,” she said.
“Her exceptional skills as a goalkeeper and her ability to command the game was truly remarkable. She demonstrated great resilience and determination, consistently performing at the highest level.
“Solo’s impact on women’s football and her achievements on the World Cup stage has left a lasting impression on me.”
The 30-year-old is one of the six Sundowns Ladies players that made Desiree Ellis’ final 23-member squad and will be crucial between the sticks for Banyana at the global showpiece.
