Fans call for Maguire’s head after poor performance

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is facing scrutiny once again following another questionable performance during their 3-0 defeat to Sevilla on Thursday night.

United made an embarrassing UEFA Europa League quarter-final exit when they were dismantled in the second leg in Seville, Spain.

In a game full of defensive blunders that cost United the game, Maguire led by example in that regard, failing to deal with a pass from goalkeeper David de Gea on the edge of the box, which saw striker Youssef En-Nesyri pounce and hit the back of the net.

De Gea was also guilty of a costly error when he left his goal post only to misjudge the ball and hand En-Nesyri his brace to win the game 5-2 on aggregate.

Maguire scored an own goal in the first-leg encounter at Old Trafford last week, which saw the Red Devils squander a two-goal lead.

The 30-year-old six-foot-tall defender has since received a backlash from United supporters who flooded social media platforms to call for the club to release him.

It goes without saying that the England international has not enjoyed his time at United since joining in 2019 for a record £80-million (over R1.8-billion), making him world’s most expensive defender.

Maguire has, however, not lived up to expectations and fell down the pecking order under newly appointed manager Erik Ten Hag, who preferred Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.

With Martinez and Varane both out with injuries, Ten Hag will have no choice but to stick with his skipper, as the Red Devils shift their focus to the FA Cup semi-final clash with Brighton Hove & Albion at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
