How Lorch’s talks with Chiefs crumbled

Thembinkosi Lorch has officially reunited with former mentor Rulani Mokwena at Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco after his potential move to Kaizer Chiefs fell off on the eve of the closure of the PSL January transfer window.

Sunday World has it on good authority that Lorch was on the list of several players who were offered to Amakhosi by Mamelodi Sundowns, as he was unhappy with his limited game time this season.

An insider at the club said Chiefs had initially shown interest in Lorch and defender Terrence Mashego but both deals ended up not materialising.

Sundowns and Amakhosi could not agree on a fee suitable for both clubs and Mokwena’s Wydad pounced on the faltering deal and captured the former Bafana Bafana star. Saudi Arabia club  Jeddah SC, were also said to be keen on landing the 31-year-old attacking midfielder until the end of the season.

Mokwena, who will be coaching Lorch for the third time, was reportedly in South Africa last week to convince the former Orlando Pirates star to join him in Morocco and revive his career on a six-month loan deal.

Lorch, who joined Sundowns in January last season, has had a love-and-hate relationship with the club as his signing was said to have been forced by Mokwena, who was later unceremoniously shown the door.

The Moroccan transfer window closed on Friday and Lorch arrived in time to beat the deadline for the loan move until the end of the season in June.

An insider has also revealed that Amakhosi will have more time to pursue the player in the next transfer move at the end of the current season.

Since moving to Chloorkop from the Buccaneers, “Nyoso” scored seven goals in the 27 matches for Sundowns. He has struggled for game time this year, with only about five matches under his belt.
