I am very excited to be back at Mamelodi Sundowns – Komphela

In an interesting twist of events, Steve Komphela has made a sensational return to Mamelodi Sundowns as a Senior coach a few days after the departure of Rulani Mokwena.

“Mamelodi Sundowns today welcomed Steve Komphela. He will serve as senior coach and will assist Manqoba Mngqithi and the technical team,” the club stated on Saturday.

“Mamelodi Sundowns is currently training in South Africa for the upcoming season. The club… will be leaving in a few days for Austria as part of its pre-season preparations.”

Upon his re-appointment, Komphela expressed his excitement to be back at the club. He  said he is looking forward to the task at hand.

“I am very excited to be back at Mamelodi Sundowns where I was always inspired and treated with respect and love,” Komphela said.

“And I am committed to contributing to the Club achieving its goals in South Africa and on the African Continent.”

Komphela left Sundowns ahead of the 2023/24 season following an alleged fallout with then-head coach Mokwena.

The outspoken 57-year-old was then appointed as the head coach of now-defunct Moroka Swallows. However, he did not complete the season due to the club’s financial struggles.

Swallows have since sold their Premier Soccer League (PSL) status to Marumo Gallants.

Komphela later left the Dube Birds in February. He was then appointed to take charge of Golden Arrows in the second half of the season in March.

His first stint at Chloorkop was in October 2020. He formed part of the co-coaching team with Mokwena and Mngqithi.
