Kaizer Chiefs marketing and commercial director Jessica Motaung has joined forces with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in a bid to have the headquarters of the African Clubs Association (ACA) built in South Africa.
The ACA is a new football body that was formed last year in November by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), with the intention of protecting and promoting the interests of African clubs.
The plan is to create a platform for all the teams on the continent to sit together, analyse the challenges they face, and find solutions.
Motaung, who is one of two vice-presidents of the ACA, headed by Young Africans head honcho Hersi Ally Said, confirmed to Sunday World recently that the PSL has agreed to help drive the endeavour.
“Well, I mean, the ACA is looking to build its headquarters, and the countries that have come forward and are bidding for it are Morocco, Algeria, and South Africa,” Motaung said.
“And it’s encouraging to see the work that the league [PSL] is doing here, and we are looking forward to the country putting up a good bid because club football on the continent is very important to us as an organisation.
“So, we want to be in a space where there’s a strong league, a strong corporate support and strong governance.”
On how having the headquarters of ACA built in SA would benefit the country and its football, Motaung explained further:
“Well, I think having ACA headquarters here would put South Africa back on the map on a football level because, again, we hosted the Fifa World Cup [in 2010] and had other major events.
“But you see that organisations like CAF are up in the north, and a lot is happening in the north [in terms of football development], so for South Africa to shine and showcase what its league can do by having these headquarters built here will be a great opportunity for us.”
“So, we are looking forward to the bid that the country will put through but certainly looking at the state of our league now and the work that is being done. We are a shining example on the continent,” she added.
