Luke Fleurs would have had a very good career, says Hunt

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has opened up about the tragic death of Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs, saying the loss of his former young prospect is a big loss to local football.

Fleurs was shot and killed in a botched car hijacking in Honeydew, Johannesburg, last week.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo, confirmed on Wednesday that six people have been arrested in connection with the killing of the 24-year-old footballer.

He had a long way to go

“What happened to Luke is an absolute tragedy; we heard the news on Wednesday night last week after it happened,” Hunt said during the Nedbank Cup press conference at the Nedbank headquarters in Sandton.

“A lot has already been said, and I don’t want to go there, but he had a big career ahead of him; he was a young boy, and, in his position, I always say centre-backs only mature at the age of 30 or older.

“If you look at the best centre-backs in the world right now, they are all over the age of 30.

“So, he had a long way to go, and I am sure that he would have had a very good career, especially at Chiefs. So, his passing is a tragedy and a big loss.”

The Chiefs management has said that Fleurs’ official memorial service will be held at the FNB Stadium on Thursday morning.

Nedbank Cup clash

Meanwhile, SuperSport will be facing Stellenbosch FC in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup, a side that is currently enjoying a 20-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Ahead of the encounter on Saturday, Hunt admitted that it will be a tough game, but said his charges are ready for the clash.

“Under no illusions, it’s going to be a tough game away from home. They are on a good run and haven’t lost in 20 games,” Hunt said.

“They are well-aware of our record against them, but that means nothing in these types of games. At least we had a week of preparation, and we are looking forward to the game.”

The match will take place at the Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is at 3pm.
