Thirty-one-year-old Real Madrid and Belgium midfielder Eden Hazard has announced his retirement from international football.
His retirement comes after the Belgian captain was part of the Roberto Martinez’s side that failed to live up to the World Cup expectations, crashing out in the group stages.
Hazard took to social media on Wednesday to announce his retirement, and expressed his gratitude for the support he received throughout his international career.
“A page turns today … Thanks for your love. Thank you for your unparalleled support. Thank you for all the joyful moments we have shared since 2008. I have decided to put an end to my international career. The succession is ready. I will miss you …” wrote Hazard on Instagram.
The former Chelsea star made his international debut at the age of 17 in a friendly match against Luxembourg on November 19 2008. He retires having secured 126 international caps, scoring 33 goals and registering 36 assist.
Hazard will look to shift his focus to Real Madrid, after struggling to stay fit at Los Blancos following his big money move in 2019.
