Sad end to Gallants’ campaign

There was drama and sorrow on the final day of the DStv Premiership yesterday. It ended in tears for Marumo Gallants, who will now play in the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) after they were relegated following their 2-0 loss to Swallows FC yesterday.

Gallants finished the season on 29 points and are anchoring the log table at the bottom and this means they get an automatic drop to the first division of SA football. It is a sad end for Gallants who had an amazing campaign in the CAF Confederations Cup. They surprised all and sundry after reaching the semifinals before they were knocked out by Young Africans of Tanzania on Tuesday.

Maritzburg United, who finished number 15, will get a lifeline via the promotion/relegation play-offs. They will play against Cape Town Spurs and Casric Stars, who finished second and third in the MFC respectively. Maritzburg finished their campaign with a 1-1 draw against champions Mamelodi Sundowns midweek and they were keen spectators and followed yesterday’s events closely.

Chippa United survived by the skin of their teeth and will hold on to their PSL status after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Golden Arrows. Chippa Mpengesi’s club ended one position above Maritzburg.

Orlando Pirates cruised to second position with a comfortable 4-0 victory over AmaZulu and they have secured a CAF Champions League spot.
