Senegal became the latest African side to crash out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, after England emerged victorious in the “clash of the lions” encounter on Sunday night.
The Lions of Teranga suffered a 3-0 defeat when they were outplayed by the Three Lions, leading to Senegal star player, Sadio Mane, who sat out the entire tournament due to an injury, sending an emotional message to his teammates.
“Dear brothers, the people are very proud of your journey, and you have put the balm in the hearts of Senegalese and all supporters by defending the national flag with dignity. Continue learning and good luck. We will go in search of more trophies Inshallah,” he wrote on Instagram.
The Bayern Munich star was ruled out of the World Cup after sustaining a fibula injury during a Bundesliga match against Werde Breme prior to the tournament.
His absence was a huge blow for Senegalese, after the former Liverpool talisman’s spot kick led Aliou Cisse’s charges to their maiden Africa Cup of Nations title, when they beat Mohammed Salah’s Egypt earlier in the year.
Senegal will be in action again when they take on Ivory Coast in the African Nations Championship Group B clash on January 14.
