After Cape Town Spurs succumbed to their seventh DStv Premiership defeat, the Urban Warriors announced Sean Connor as the club’s technical director with immediate effect. Connor is a UEFA pro license coach with extensive experience in various roles in the industry.
Spurs coach, Shaun Bartlett, a former Charlton Athletic and Bafana Bafana legend has found the going very in the paid ranks. He did an excellent job in promoting the side from the national first division but the PSL is a different kettle of fish and the club is already staring relegation in the face.
Spurs says that Connor will be tasked with all football operations at Ikamva and will ensure that the club’s football objectives are met.
Spurs were nailed 2-1 by Cape Town City at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday in the first instalment of the iKapa Derby of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season. Spurs have noe established themselves as candidates for relegation and this move to bring Connor is seen as a way to curb the downwards spiral that the PSL are experiencing.
Spurs are on a seven-match losing streak. They have scored a mere four goals and have conceded 15 goals and are sitting at the bottom of the league table on a minus 11 points. They have zero points on the table and this is a huge concern for the club. Their next match is against SuperSport United in Tshwane on Wednesday.
Against neighbours City, the Urban Warriors got the game off on a positive note, with Ashley Cupido rounding off a swift counter-attacking move in the third minute of the match.
While Spurs created numerous chances throughout the tie, City levelled matters courtesy of a 43rd minute penalty by Darwin Gonzalez. Nevertheless, a Khanyiso Mayo brace saw the Citizens bag three points in the fiercely contested encounter.
