Underdog tag will not come to play against Sundowns – Msimango

Kaizer Chiefs defender Given Msimango admits that despite going into the game against Mamelodi Sundowns as underdogs, the tag will not come to play due to the magnitude of the fixture.

Amakhosi host the Brazilians in a DStv Premiership clash at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday night. The game gets under way at 7.30pm.

It goes without saying that the Chiefs go into the encounter carrying the heavy underdog tag against the side that is on the cusp of winning its seventh Premiership title this season.

Contrary to that, Amakhosi, on the other hand, are enduring one of their toughest seasons ever and find themselves facing the danger of finishing outside of the top eight for the second time in the last decade.

The first time was during the 2018–19 season. To avoid that, it would require the Chiefs to win all five of their remaining league games.

They will be eager to build on their hard-fought 2-1 win over SuperSport United at the weekend. The victory ended their winless run and goal drought.

We will show up and do our best

Speaking on Tuesday during a media open day at the Chiefs Village in Naturena, south of Johannesburg, Msimango said they will gladly accept not being favourites to win the match.

“Of course, I think not being considered a favourite does not befit the badge that I am wearing,” Msimango responded to a question by Sunday World.

“Chiefs is a massive club that has achieved a lot in the South African context of the game. So, it’s a new feeling, but we take it because we understand where we are as a team as well as our opponents in terms of their footballing qualities and aspects.

“So, if people peck us as underdogs, we will gladly accept it because it does not change any dynamics or how we intend to approach the game.

“We will try and honour the badge by showing up and doing our best.”

The Glamour Boys are currently at number eight with 33 points, while the Sundowns are on top of the log with 59 points.
