Listen: AmaZulu king commands hostile relations between Zulus and Indians to end

Johannesburg – AmaZulu king in waiting MisuZulu kaZwelithini has weighed in the ongoing reign of terror and looting engulfing most parts of KwaZulu-Natal warning that the bad blood between the Zulus and the people of Indian heritage in the province was a ticking time bomb.

“What is happening between the Zulus and Indians must come to an end with immediate effect. Our Indian brothers are our closest neighbours and the second biggest population of Indians in the country outside of India. I appeal to everyone that we embrace the Indians because we share our land with them. I therefore appeal for peace and calm,” said MisuZulu.

The AmaZulu king was speaking in the aftermath of the simmering tensions between the AmaZulu nation and the Indian community which was exacerbated by the looting of shops around Durban and the surrounding areas.

The Indian business community has since blamed the Zulu people of targeting their shops and homes and threatened to shoot and kill anyone who is a Zulu as a form of retaliation.

The violent looting which is organized under the banner of #Free Zuma has seen a state of chaos both in KZN and Gauteng province and led to suspension of public transport as the looting continues.

It is not for the first time that the hostile relations between the two groupings have come under scrutiny, the late Zulu monarch king Goodwill kaZwelithini also raised concerns about the strife.

He subsequently instructed traditional leaders to spearhead reconciliatory talks by visiting different hostels and communities in Durban and initiate economic programmes which will see Africans and the Indian businesspeople working together.

He said this was to avoid the situation like the 1949 violence where Zulus fought against Indians which led to the loss of many lives.
