It has been a year since the passing of Ayepyep Lifetsyle’s co-founder Oupa Sefoka, popularly known by his stage name DJ Sumbody.
DJ Sumbody died in a hail of bullets when unknown assailants opened fire on his vehicle in the early hours of November 20 2022 in Woodmead, Johannesburg.
This weekend, Cape Town’s nightlife will come alive as the Kloof Street establishment gears up for the festive season with an exciting three-day festival.
The main event is set for Saturday, coinciding with DJ Sumbody’s killing more than a year ago. The event will also pay a tribute to his legacy.
Koketso Sefoka, DJ Sumbody’s brother and spokesperson for the family, said the weekend event will set in motion the festive season.
He said Ayepyep is ready to create unforgettable moments to share the joys that the establishment has always been known for.
Commemoration of a growing legacy
“The Cape 2 Samba Festival is a very special kick-off of the country’s party season, as it’s also a commemoration of the growing legacy of my brother DJ Sumbody,” said Koketso.
“This festival really reflects his boisterous approach to his short but well-lived life, founded on his own brand of creativity and unique way of bringing people together.
“We’re inviting everyone to come and celebrate this momentous occasion with us with a sensational Samba soiree.”
After closing its doors temporarily in August, the Ayepyep Lifestyle in Cape Town announced in September that it was preparing to resume operations.
In recent months, the establishment has been at the centre of a highly publicised dispute involving DJ Sumbody’s former business partner Kagiso Setsetse, who sold his 50% stake in the business.
DJ Sumbody’s family and alleged 28 gang leader’s [Ralph Stanfield] mother-in-law, Barbara Johnson, now own the remaining stake.
Sunday World previously reported that Setsetse had opened a criminal case against Stanfield for hijacking Ayepyep.
Setsetse also pressed criminal charges against Stanfield’s wife Nicole Johnson, her cousin Saadiq Peterson, and the alleged gangster’s employee Warren Dennis.
The case was opened at the Brooklyn police station in Pretoria and was transferred to the Cape Town Central police station for investigation.
