Former Skeem Saam actor Thabo Masoga, who now works as a security guard at a bank in Zebediela Plaza, Limpopo, was diagnosed with a cataract in his left eye.
Speaking at Maliming Guest Lodge this week for a Sunday World Engage podcast interview which will go live on this publication’s YouTube channel on Saturday, Masoga said he will accept help from anyone who can assist him with the surgical procedure.
He has pleaded for people to find him a surgeon who can perform the surgery at a cost of R15,000.
Lost a lot of money in unsuccessful projects
The actor began by refuting claims that he lost his flat/apartment and stated that he is renting it out to tenants.
“The five cars are gone, and there is only one car, which is the Opel Corsa. But I do not drive it for some spiritual reasons. I actually sold two cars to do a project that cost R800,000, for which I never got paid even a cent,” said Masoga.
Masoga, who played Ananias, the landlord of Big Boy and Leshole Mabitsela, alleged that he was once asked to write a script for the show despite not being a writer for the series.
“This industry uses a lot of people. There are stories that I have written and have seen on television. I will not mention them because I do not want to fight people. You submit a script to someone, and then they will shoot it in KZN in IsiZulu to try and shift the focus.
Industry did a lot of people wrong
“Ninety-nine percent of the stories that people see on television are not the current producers’ original concepts. You will find that three or four years ago the script landed on his lap. And he is now using that,” he claimed.
Moving from acting to being a security guard was a significant shift. However, for Masoga, he was returning to his first love.
“I am a people’s person. I am very involved in community building, and I did a lot of projects to motivate the youngsters. So, when they cut my contract off, it was easier for me to come back home. When I started working in 1989, I was a security officer until 1998. And I retired in 2014 when my role became popular.”
