Ma R5’s ex-lover Jelly Babie will not quit music for spiritual calling

Jelly Babie has been holding off accepting her calling for almost two years.

Karabo Khakhu, a 19-year-old singer from Mabopane in Tshwane, has chosen to pursue her spiritual vocation as a traditional healer.

This follows the brief 11-month marriage to Koketso Shibabu before splitting up with him.

Jelly Babie told Sunday World that she will not stop making music because of her spiritual calling.

“Music is my passion; how can I stop making music? My ancestors know. Music is my other gift,” she said.

“I am still young. There is time for everything. I wear my normal clothes and put on make-up and a wig; I am not going to change who I am.”

The Jukulyn singer said everything that has happened in her life has been a build-up to her calling. Without going into detail about her calling or her broken marriage, she said she is starting afresh.

“All the challenges I faced were because of this. It is starting to make sense,” she said.

Bullied by schoolmates

Jelly Babie dated Itumeleng “Vusi Ma R5” Mosoeu when she was 15 years old and started performing at night clubs in Tshwane with the late artist.

She dropped out of school in Grade 11 after Bacardi Star Vusi Ma R5, real name Itumeleng Godfrey Mosoeu, was killed in January 2023.

Mosoeu was shot outside the Legentsheng tavern in Soshanguve, about 30km north of Pretoria.

According to reports, he was attacked while he and his companions were outside a tavern in Extension 13. He was shot dead while heading to his vehicle.

When his friends went to investigate after hearing the gunshots, they discovered him lying on the ground.

“I dropped out of school after Ma R5’s funeral because I was being bullied by other kids at school, and teachers were getting too much into my business.

“Maybe I will go back [to school]. I just needed to finish this. But my journey is long; it doesn’t end,” said Jelly Babie.
