Nkgapele Mogodi, 27, cares about the development of his community in Ga-Molepo in Limpopo that in 2017 he started a business called Diatla Ke Lehumo Supply, which recycles used materials to design shoes, school bags and hats. It offers much-needed employment and contributes to the area’s overall economic development. Remarkably, Mogodi is a self-taught designer. “All the products I design with my team are hand-made. I am giving youngsters a chance to do things for themselves and earn a living through that,” says Mogodi. “My hands are my ticket to success and, through my creativity, I encourage young people to think outside the box for us to be versatile and exquisite when we do things.” Mogodi’s dream is to build a factory in his village so he could create more jobs for locals before expanding his business operations to the rest of the country. Some of his accolades include him making it to the top five of Let’s Push competition, a business mentorship campaign facilitated by Standard Bank, in April this year.
