Death toll from heavy rains in KwaZulu-Natal increases to seven

The number of people killed by heavy rains in KwaZulu-Natal has risen to seven after three more bodies were discovered along the Umbilo River in Durban.

It has also been reported that one person is still missing after severe winds and rains started lashing parts of the province early this week, leaving hundreds of people homeless in Inanda and surrounding areas.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government said about 70 houses were destroyed in eThekwini and a further 110 were partially damaged, leaving 151 people homeless. The total number of people affected so far is 552.

“We can confirm that at this stage there are two bodies that are being recovered at Bayhead, according to information that we have received from the South African Police Service, which then brings the total of bodies that have been recovered to seven at this point,” said cooperative governance department spokesperson Nonala Ndlovu.
