Frightened Durban residents share their ‘mini earthquake’ experience

Johannesburg –  Frightened Durban residents have taken to social media to share their experiences of the ‘mini earthquake’ which was mostly felt along with the northwestern parts of the city.

Many residents confirmed the earth tremor to have happened around 4 am on Thursday morning lasting for about 12 seconds.

Kloof resident Hilton Marc said, “Windows were shaking with a heavy rumble and the ground was shaking.”

According to the Earth Alert, a Facebook group the tremor recorded a 10.0 km hypocenter and 3.8 magnitude.

Another local resident confirmed the earthquake saying, “Inanda road Hillcrest heard loud rumbling like a long deep thunder and then the walls shook and creaked at 4 am.”

This is the second earthquake to hit Durban in consecutive years, last year at about 1 pm during the day an earth tremor lasting about 45 seconds hit areas on the south coast including uMgababa, Hillcrest, Durban North, Morningside, and some parts of Pietermaritzburg.

In 2017, a so-called mini tsunami also hit Durban beach when Durban north beach and Durban’s beachfront were flooded as large swells moved over barriers destroying food stalls and some holiday resorts closer to the beach.
