Hawks hot on the trail of bogus doctors in Western Cape

The Hawks in the Western Cape are appealing for help with their investigation to locate three fake doctors.

The three men are said to be between the ages of 37 and 53 and are wanted in connection with fraud, contravention of the Medicines and Related Substances Act, as well as contravention of the Health Professions Act.

The spokesperson for the Hawks in the province, Zinzi Hani, said the trio was arrested during an operation by the serious commercial crimes investigation team based in Bellville in 2018.

“The operation was as a result of information that we received of three men suspected to be practising without licences and operating as medical doctors in the areas between Bellville and Khayelitsha,” said Hani.

“Investigations revealed that they were indeed not registered with the Health Professional Council of South Africa. They were also dispensing medication and medical certificates to patients using genuine doctors’ details and practice numbers.”

Hani said the two accused, Bunnel Kitete Tunda and Jeremy Liyongo Bompemo, have been on the run since their last court appearance when they were released on R5 000 bail each. Warrants for their arrests have since been issued.

“The third suspect, who also practised illegally in Khayelitsha during 2018, is also on the run. However, after the undercover operations, he could not be traced.

“Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects is urged to contact the investigating officer, Colonel Morne Pierre Vos, on 082 481 3164.”
