Another prominent taxi figure has now been pulled into the widening extortion and money laundering case involving influential Mpumalanga businessman Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni.
Mpumalanga police confirmed on Friday that a fourth suspect handed himself over to police at Kwaggafontein Police Station before appearing in court alongside Sibanyoni and his co-accused.
The Sunday World has established that the suspect is KwaMhlanga taxi boss Bafana “King of the Sky” Sindane, a flamboyant figure known for his luxury lifestyle, flashy fashion and love for expensive cars.
“The fourth suspect who was wanted for a case of extortion and money laundering has handed himself over to the police at Kwaggafontein Police Station,” police said in an update issued on Friday.
“The suspect, aged 51, was processed and is expected to appear at Kwaggafontein Magistrate Court today, 15 May 2026, joining the three suspects who were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday, 12 May 2026.”
High-profile arrests rattle taxi industry
The development dramatically escalates a case that has already shaken taxi and political circles following the arrest earlier this week of Sibanyoni, Phillmon Makhaya Msiza and Mvimba Daniel Masilela.
The National Prosecuting Authority alleges the accused forced a businessman to pay more than R2.2 million in protection fees between 2022 and 2025 while threatening to shut down his business operations.
Sindane, whose nickname “King of the Sky” reflects his love for helicopters and larger-than-life image in Gauteng’s taxi industry, has cultivated a public persona associated with luxury vehicles, designer clothing and high-profile appearances.
Taxi-culture documentaries and social media clips have long portrayed him as one of Gauteng’s most influential transport bosses, with convoy-style entrances and flashy displays of wealth helping cement his mystique in the industry.
The extortion case has also drawn national attention because of Sibanyoni’s repeated mention during testimony at the Madlanga commission probing alleged organised crime networks and links between taxi bosses and law enforcement officials.
All four accused remain in custody as the matter continues before the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court.
