Intoxicating substance not ruled out as cause of deadly accident

At least four people died in a horrific crash involving a Volkswagen Polo and a BMW sedan on the N17 east in Ekurhuleni on Monday night.

The vehicles collided head-on near the Tonk Meter Road off-ramp in Springs.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department spokesperson Lerato Monyane said: “A VW Polo, which had three female occupants, collided with a BMW sedan driven by an unknown male. The jaws of life had to be used to extract trapped occupants.”

She said all the occupants including the drivers of both vehicles were declared dead on the scene, adding that the police are investigating the cause of the accident.

“The use of intoxicating substance is not excluded from investigations,” said Monyane.

The accident came hours after a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a City to City bus occurred on the R61 between Flagstaff and Lusikisiki on Sunday claiming at least 11 lives including two children.

The Eastern Cape department of transport said on Monday that the details surrounding the collision and its cause remain sketchy.

City to City is South African intercity bus services owned by Autopax, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa.

“We are deeply saddened by the number of fatalities in this accident. Autopax takes safety seriously and will participate fully in investigations to establish the cause of the accident,” said Autopax CEO Niel Roesch on Monday.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families and friends of those who have lost their loved ones.”
