Mahwelereng learner languishes in jail for murder of fellow pupil

A 20-year-old pupil is in jail for the murder of his school mate in Sandloot village in Mahwelereng, Limpopo.

The suspected murderer, who was arrested on Tuesday, is due in the Mahwelereng magistrate’s court on Wednesday.

His arrest followed a police investigation into the death of a learner.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said an inquest docket has been opened following the death of Tatesi Nthuse Ngoepe at his homestead on Sunday.

“The tragic incident follows a chain of events that unfolded on August 18 at school,” said Ledwaba.

“Preliminary investigations by the police indicated that a fight broke out between two learners resulting in one of them sustaining injuries.

“The victim was hospitalized and was released only to experience complications upon returning home. Sadly, he succumbed to injuries.

“Police were notified about the incident by the family after the deceased was taken to the mortuary.”

Ledwaba said investigations commenced as soon as an inquest docket was opened while awaiting postmortem results.

“Consequently, the case was changed to murder, leading to the subsequent arrest of the suspect. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.”

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe condemned the violent behavior of some learners, especially on school premises.

She lauded the investigating team for uncovering the truth and arresting the perpetrator.

Police investigations continue.
