MEC wants harsh sentences meted out to student killers

Several suspects accused of killing three high school pupils in two different schools in the Eastern Cape have been taken to custody.

The teenagers were studying for their ongoing final examinations when they came under attack in two separate incidents.

The fourth victim of the shootings is critical but recovering in the hospital.

It is alleged that the men started by shooting grades 11 and 12 pupils from Mzomhle High School on Sunday night. One survived the attack.

The assailants proceeding to Buchule High School where they killed two more pupils, also in grade 11 and 12. Both schools are located in Mdantsane, East London.

Police were called to the crime scene and their quick response led to the apprehension of the assailants.

Heinous crime

Fundile Gade, Eastern Cape education MEC, described the attack as a heinous crime and said the perpetrators must face the wrath of the law.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon on charges of murder. The motive of the shooting is not known yet but police are investigating.

“They have robbed the families of these young souls. We condemn this violence and crime against our learners and schools. It is concerning,” said Gade.

After the families of the deceased were informed of the shooting, Gade said the department activated a psycho-social support service for both schools.

“This is to ensure that all affected learners, teachers and parents receive debriefing and counselling,” he said.

Condolences

The MEC sent his condolences to grieving families and wished a speedy recovery to the survivor of the attack.

Gade said: “The society needs to join hands in protecting our learners. We call upon the criminal justice system to effect harsh sentences to these heartless criminals.

“We have mobilised other sister departments to assist in ensuring that all affected schools and families receive our support as government.

“May the families of these three learners find solace in God during this trying time of their lives. We send our sincere condolences to them during this period.

“Just last week, a learner from Parterson High School in Schauderville was also brutally killed in this fashion.”

Schauderville is one of the oldest northern areas settlements in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.
