Mosa Chabane welcomes arrests of home affairs departmental officials

Mosa Chabane, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee at Home Affairs, has noted efforts aimed at combating corruption within the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and welcomed the arrests of the departmental officials implicated.

He said on Thursday: “We welcome the drive to weed out corrupt elements within the department who have compromised and undermined South Africa’s laws. It is concerning those rotten elements within the department are single-handedly, as a result of greed, undermining our laws and inadvertently compromising the security of our country.”

Chabane said the existence of illegal immigration syndicates worried the department despite having nabbed some offenders.

“We, therefore, call for strengthened collaboration between the department, the community, and law enforcement agencies to ensure that those participating in corrupt activities are arrested. Furthermore, the committee calls on the department to strengthen their process to fight corrupt tendencies,” said Chabane.

Chabane also added that the committee appreciates loyal officials who continuously uphold the law and resist temptation.

“These officials are a true embodiment of what a capable state should look like and must be commended,” he said.

During his address at the OR Tambo International Airport, DHA Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said six officials had already been apprehended at the OR Tambo International Airport and 12 had been arrested in KwaZulu-Natal for passport-related fraud.

Reiterating his department’s commitment to rooting out corruption, Motsoaledi said: “Once again I restate my commitment that I will not tire to fight corruption wherever it rears its ugly head.

“My message is clear: If you commit any sort of crime anywhere within Home Affairs, we are coming for you!”
