In a significant step towards her reinvention, former SABC business news anchor Nzinga Qunta was admitted as an advocate of the high court of South Africa, marking a noteworthy milestone.
Qunta’s transition from dominating the airwaves on SABC3’s On Point to becoming a member of South Africa’s legal elite at the age of 40 demonstrates her tenacity and diverse skill set.
Her admission, formalised through the high court’s rigorous process, marks a bold new chapter.
Born to the late journalist Vuyisile Qunta and lawyer, author and former SABC board member Christine Qunta, Nzinga’s upbringing across Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Australia during her parents’ exile shaped her global outlook.
After working in the media for more than 15 years, she established herself as a reliable voice by deconstructing complicated business subjects on ANN7, Power 98.7, and HOT 102.7FM, where she hosted Hot Business.
Her international stature grew at the World Economic Forum in Davos (2022–2024), moderating discussions with figures like Jack Ma and Joseph Stiglitz, and hosting events at the South Africa Investment Conference and Gitex Africa.
Book translated into 11 languages
In 2022, Qunta ventured into authorship with her children’s book, Amari’s Adventures, launched at Gallery Momo in Parktown North.
Translated into 11 South African languages, including Nama, to honour her mother’s heritage, the book was inspired by her late sister, Yolisa Qunta.
This literary milestone showcased her commitment to cultural inclusivity, making stories accessible to diverse young readers.
In January 2024, after seven years at the SABC, Qunta resigned, leaving behind a platform where she delivered impartial news to millions across sub-Saharan Africa.
“It was a privilege to inform and engage audiences,” she noted, crediting mentors like Thandeka Gqubule-Mbeki.
Pursuing her legal ambitions, she completed a demanding LLB and navigated the high court’s admission process, which requires formal endorsement by a judge.
Her name now graces the roll of advocates, a moment met with widespread praise on social media.
