‘Phone that vanished on day of Meyiwa’s death belonged to Kelly’

Police data analyst Colonel Lambertus Steyn revealed in the Pretoria High Court on Friday that a cellphone that vanished on the night of Senzo Meyiwa was killed belonged to his then-girlfriend Kelly Khumalo.

Connecting a web of calls from cellphones, Steyn said it was discovered that Kelly had been in contact with accused number one, Muzikawukhulelwa Sthemba Sibiya on October 26 2014.

On Thursday, Steyn testified that the singer had also been having cellphone conversations with accused number five, Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli, months before the murder of Meyiwa, suggesting that some of the call records might have been deleted after the shooting.

He also managed to connect Kelly’s sister, Zandie Khumalo, to Sibiya, saying their registered numbers exchanged a call on October 24 2014.

The data anaylyst said a sim-swap on Meyiwa’s number was done in October 2014 and linked the same numbers to having contact with a number registered under Kelly.

He added that there were eight calls between the singer and David Mathebula, all of which were unanswered, and that it is not clear who was calling who.

The calls were made on October 27.

In exchanged calls as received from the phone downloads, Steyn told the court that he is of the opinion that suspect number three, Mthobisi Gadla Mcube, and Ntuli were the main men considering that they were communicating more often, before and after the murder.

He said Mcube was arrested for possession of illegal firearm and while conducting the downloads on the phone, he was instructed to search if the men in question previously had dreadlocks.

As to their findings, Mcube took pictures in his beige clothing having a dreadlocks hairstyle at least on the day of the incident.

He said the images can be better confirmed by Sergeant Mabasa’s findings.

The trial continues on Monday.
