SANParks is hunting down a reckless driver filmed drifting a vehicle on dusty roads and speeding across river crossings inside the Kruger National Park in what conservation authorities have described as a shocking act of lawlessness inside one of Africa’s most protected ecosystems.

The viral social media footage, which surfaced this week, allegedly shows the unidentified man spinning and drifting his car on gravel roads before later racing across river bridges and ignoring officially closed routes inside the park while onlookers cheer him on.

Suspect to face ‘severe consequences’

The incident has triggered fury from SANParks management, which warned that the suspect would face severe consequences once identified.

“A disturbing social media footage depicting an individual engaging in dangerous, reckless, and unlawful conduct within the Kruger National Park has surfaced and [been] noted with great concern and disappointment,” said SANParks head of communications and spokesperson JP Louw.

“The footage shows the individual crossing rivers unlawfully, driving on roads that were officially closed, and operating a motor vehicle recklessly within a national park environment.”

‘Blatant disregard for conservation regulations’

Louw said the conduct showed “a blatant disregard for conservation regulations, public safety, environmental protection measures, and the authority of park management”.

The organisation confirmed that a search was underway to identify the driver.

“We are looking for this individual, and he will face the music,” Louw said.

SANParks warned that the behaviour could amount to serious violations under the National Environmental Management Act and the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act.

Authorities said offences linked to reckless conduct in protected areas could lead to criminal prosecution, hefty fines, imprisonment, civil claims for environmental damage and bans from entering parks managed by SANParks.

 ‘Wildlife,  sensitive ecosystems at stake’

Louw stressed that road closures inside the Kruger National Park exist for critical environmental and safety reasons.

“Driving through rivers, disregarding road closures, and reckless driving in protected areas not only place the lives of the individuals involved at risk, but also endanger wildlife, damage sensitive ecosystems, and compromise infrastructure and visitor safety,” he said.

The video has also landed some SANParks staff members in trouble.

Gate officials allegedly seen in the footage encouraging and supporting the stunt driving will also face consequences.

“Gate officials seen on the video encouraging and supporting the behaviour will also face consequences for their irresponsible actions which are contrary to park rules and staff conduct,” Louw said.

The incident has reignited concerns over tourists increasingly chasing viral social media content inside conservation areas, often at the expense of wildlife protection and visitor safety.

SANParks has urged members of the public with information that may assist in identifying the suspect to contact authorities through official channels or the nearest law enforcement agency.
