Gauteng police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged suicide of a police officer at Sunnyside Police Station, following reports of workplace bullying.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), allegations have emerged suggesting that the officer may have experienced bullying in the workplace, which is believed to have contributed to the tragic incident. Authorities say the matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness.
Police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that an investigation is already underway.
“The (SAPS) management in Gauteng is aware of reports of alleged workplace bullying involving a member, which are said to have contributed to the member’s tragic death.”
She said the organisation has begun processes to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
‘Thorough investigation is underway’
“The SAPS views these allegations in a serious light and has initiated processes to establish the facts surrounding the incident. A thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances and any contributing factors.”
Nevhuhulwi also appealed to the public and media to act responsibly while the investigation continues.
“At this stage, the SAPS appeals to all stakeholders, including the media and the public, to refrain from speculation or the circulation of unverified information, as this may compromise the integrity of the investigation and cause further distress to the affected.”
Workplace misconduct condemned
She reiterated the organisation’s stance against workplace misconduct.
“The organisation remains committed to the wellbeing of its members and reiterates its zero-tolerance approach to any form of workplace misconduct, including bullying and harassment. Appropriate action will be taken should any wrongdoing be confirmed.”
The identity of the deceased officer has not been disclosed. The investigation remains ongoing.
