A job advertisement circulating on LinkedIn claiming to offer “grants administration” positions has been flagged as fraudulent by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
The post, which has been widely shared on social media, purports to recruit candidates for administrative roles linked to grants processing.
However, concerns have been raised about its legitimacy after it began circulating outside official government recruitment channels and requested users to engage via unofficial platforms.
Warning to the public
SASSA has distanced itself from the advertisement, warning the public that it does not recruit staff through unverified social media posts or third-party links.
Adding to the clarification, Andile Tshona, senior manager of media relations, told Sunday World: “Kindly note that this message is fake and was not issued by SASSA. SASSA vacancies are only published on the official SASSA website and official SASSA social media pages.”
The agency has repeatedly warned job seekers about the rise of fake job adverts targeting vulnerable individuals, often promising well-paying positions with minimal requirements. In many cases, these scams are designed to harvest personal information or mislead applicants into fraudulent processes.
‘Verify job opportunities’
Authorities continue to advise the public to verify all job opportunities directly through official government websites and to avoid sharing personal information on unverified platforms.
SASSA has also encouraged job seekers to remain cautious of posts that circulate via social media platforms, including LinkedIn, unless they can be confirmed through official government sources.
Fake news ’causes public confusion’
Earlier this year SASSA rejected claims that it had changed its rules to allow foreign nationals to receive the R370 monthly Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress grant.
Paseka Letsatsi, a spokesperson for Sassa, stated that the shared information on social media is misleading and could potentially lead to public confusion.
His comment comes after some social media users posted on their accounts that “the ANC government just updated the Sassa website; asylum seekers [sic] are now included in our social grants”.
“They are sick and tired of hiding the fact that they were secretly paying Sassa grants to illegal foreigners,” read the posts, which went viral at the time.
