Suspect linked to stabbing of Stellies player remanded in jail

A suspect has been arrested and charged with attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of Premier Soccer League outfit Stellenbosch FC’s player, Oshwin Andries.

Andries died after a frenzied knife attack in 2023.

The defender was stabbed on January 29 and died later, when he returned to the hospital after complaining that he was not feeling well.

Andries, who was 19 years old at the time, was stabbed in the head and lower back.

According to reports, Nadene Hartman, Andries, and four other people were enjoying drinks at a tavern in Mandela City, an informal settlement, hours before the attack.

His mother, Natasha Andries, said she was preparing to sleep when she heard someone shouting outside, telling her that her son had been stabbed.

The 47-year-old said by the time she got to the scene, her son had already been put into an ambulance and was rushed to the hospital and discharged later.

Attempted murder

The office of the national director of public prosecutions has decided to charge the suspect with attempted murder, even though Andries did not die as a result of the stabbing.

On Friday, police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie confirmed that a 28-year-old suspect was arrested on June 18 after a warrant for his arrest was issued.

“He appeared in the Paarl magistrate’s court on Tuesday on a charge of attempted murder, where he was remanded in custody,” said Potjie.

“The case was postponed to Friday for bail application in the Paarl B-court.”

Andries represented South Africa at the under-20 and under-23 levels, captaining the former.

On February 18, 2023, hundreds of people attended his funeral.

On what would have been his 20th birthday, Stellenbosch FC retired his number 25 jersey in his honour.
