The residents of Taiwan Site C in Khayelitsha, Cape Town are still reeling in shock and fear after an 18-year-old girl was found dead in her neighbour’s shack.
It is alleged that Sikelelwa Mona was served alcohol mixed with eye-gene drops, which led to her passing out, before she was raped by multiple men at her neighbours residence.
Mona’s naked and lifeless body was discovered at the weekend. Upon finding her body, the police realised that her private part had been cut off.
The police in Khayelitsha have confirmed that two men and women who were allegedly in the shack with Mona before she died were arrested and later released due to insufficient evidence linking them to the murder.
Mona’s death follows another horrific murder of an 18-year-old matriculant from Fleurhof, Johannesburg last week.
Jabulile Hope Mhluzi was fatally stabbed after a fracas ensued between groups of teenagers on Tuesday last week.
Mhluzi and a friend were rushed to the hospital where she succumbed to stab wounds. She was buried on Friday and her family is still waiting for an arrest. Her friend is fighting for her life in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
Women for Change, a non-profit organisation that educates, advocates, and campaigns against gender-based violence and femicide, human rights, and gender inequality urged the public to join a Run For Her Virtual Race in August.
“A participant will be participating with hundreds of women, children and men who will run or walk to stand against gender-based violence in South Africa,” said Women for Change.
