Zahara’s family pays tribute ‘to a humble child, a beacon of hope’

The family of late multi-award winning musician Zahara described her as a humble child despite her soaring success.

Zahara’s uncle and family spokesperson Nkosiyami Mkutukana was addressing journalists outside the star’s home in Phumlani, East London, on Tuesday morning.

Mkutukana also thanked the medical staff at Olivedale Netcare Hospital, in Johannesburg, where the star was admitted for liver complications over two weeks ago.

“To us she was a humble person and an ordinary child,” he said.

“We would love to express our appreciation to the staff members of the hospital who took care of her when she was ill. We appreciate what they did. They did all their best to avoid what has happened. We appreciate their efforts.”

Zahara, born Bulelwa Mkutukana, passed away at the hospital on Monday night surrounded by family and her fiancé Mpho Xaba.

She was a pure light and purer heart

In a statement released by the family, the singer wanted her fans to remember her with healing, joy, kindness and inspiration she brought to them.

“It is with heavy hearts and deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved daughter, sister and friend Zahara. Surrounded by family and  friends, Zahara departed this world on Monday,” the statement read.

“She was a pure light and even a purer heart in this world. A beacon of hope. A gift and a blessing to us and countless people around the world.”

The singer’s family has asked for privacy as they hold meetings for her burial and memorial arrangements which will be released in due course.

Zahara released her first studio album Loliwe in 2011, which went double platinum. Her second album Phendula two years later.

She has won 17 SAMA awards, three Metro FM awards and a Nigeria Entertainment award among several accolades.
