Plot within own camp to use NEC election to oust Ramaphosa foiled

President Cyril Ramaphosa has survived another plot to remove him – this time from within his own camp.

Sunday World understands the election of the new national executive committee (NEC) of the ANC dominated by Ramaphosa’s allies foiled a plot hedged in December to force him to step aside and clear his name over the Phala Phala saga.

A strong view has emerged from within and outside Ramaphosa’s camp that the Phala Phala scandal was a burden to the party and was going to cause the organisation to bleed votes at the 2024 provincial and general elections. It was argued the Phala Phala issue was akin to the Nkandla matter towards the 2016 local elections.


There were fears that public protector advocate Kholeka Gcaleka’s report into Phala Phala might be negative, forcing the ANC on the defensive instead of campaigning for a decisive
victory at the polls.

However, ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe warned the ANC would lose 20% of its vote immediately should Ramaphosa
