President Ramaphosa to address the nation

President Cyril Ramaphosa is later today expected to give a progress report on the implementation of measures to stop the spread of coronavirus and announce if more steps were needed to fight the pandemic.

On Sunday morning, the President is scheduled to meet with business leaders to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on the country’s already ailing economy.

Earlier this month the country’s economy slipped into recession after it contracted by 1,4%.

Yesterday, finance minister Tito Mboweni and SA Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago met to discuss the economic package to cushion business against the damage visted on them by the virus.

“The engagement with business forms part of a series of meetings the President has held with various stakeholder constituencies – including communities of faith and the nation’s political leadership – in the week since his declaration on 15 March 2020 of the national state of disaster,” says the statement.

“Following the Council’s deliberations, President Ramaphosa will address the nation in a message that will be broadcast on radio and television, and livestreamed online,” the statement adds.

By late yesterday the country had recorded 240 cases of the virus.
