Watsons appeal to Mbalula, Mkhize

Call for crash probe to be expedited

The family of deceased former Bosasa boss Gavin Watson has called on transport and health ministers Fikile Mbalula and Zweli Mkhize to help in expediting the case, amid mounting fears that a toxicology report could delay the probe by two years.

Watson’s nephew, Jared, told Sunday World that the preliminary investigation into his uncle’s mysterious death had been completed but a toxicology report was still outstanding.

“We are calling on minister Mbalula to help expedite the case. It is a matter of public record that the circumstances around Gavin’s death are extremely suspicious, and it is of great concern that the South African Police Service has informed us that without an expedited process, toxicology results can take as long as two years to receive,” he said.

Watson was mysteriously killed near the OR Tambo International Airport when the Toyota Corolla he was travelling in hit a bridge pillar in August last year.

Mbalula said at the time that his department would launch a “full investigation” into the mysterious accident after seeing footage.

“When the incident occurred, minister Mbalula had said his department was launching a full investigation into the case and intimated that the matter was being  treated as one of urgency given the public interest of the matter,” he added.

Jared said it had been seven months since the incident, but the family was yet to be provided with any information as to what transpired.

“We have reached out to the department of health but have yet to be provided with any assurances as to when the toxicology results may be provided.”

Mbalula did not respond to questions.
