The hard-fought 2-1 win over tournament favourites Senegal on Thursday has not only put Amajimbos in a good position to qualify for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) quarterfinals, but also to book a ticket to the Fifa World Cup in Qatar in November.
South Africa face Algeria this evening in their second Group D match at the Mohammed VI Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, and a win will make them kill two birds with one stone.
The young South Africans are currently leading their group with three points, followed by Algeria and Ghana on one point apiece following their 2-2 draw in their opening match, while the Senegalese are bottom.
Given the fact that coach Vela Khumalo’s side did not have the best of preparations by not playing any international friendly matches building up to the tournament, they could not have asked for a better start to their campaign.
So, even though a draw will not be a bad result for Amajimbos, Khumalo will emphasise that his young troops apply themselves better than they did in the first game, as the target remains, which is to book that ticket to the World Cup in Qatar.
“Algeria is somewhat similar to us. We have done our analysis on all of them, and we think we can do well,” Khumalo said.
“We have given ourselves a mandate that we want to do well and qualify for the World Cup. In addition, we said that going to the World Cup is not about getting out of the group stages, but we also want to see ourselves going further in the tournament.”
All the quarter-finalists will qualify for Qatar 2026, and two additional places will be available through play-off matches between the third-placed teams in each group. After tonight’s game, Amajimbos will wrap up their group stages against Ghana on Wednesday night, with the hope of entering the game under less pressure.
