De Sa in talks to join Ghana team at 2026 World Cup

South Africa is likely to have another representative at this year’s Fifa World Cup in the form of coach Roger de Sa, who is finalising talks to become the Ghana national team assistant coach.

Ghana have just announced the well-travelled Carlos Queiroz as their head coach with a few months before the 2026 World Cup gets underway in the US, Mexico and Canada in June. This after the Black Stars of Ghana parted ways with Otto Addo earlier in the month.

De Sa and Queiroz, who were both born in Mozambique, have always been tag-team partners and have coached several national teams in Africa and the Middle East together.

De Sa’s first stint of coaching at international level was with Bafana Bafana, where he served as assistant coach to the late Styles Phumo in 2004.

He then worked as Queiroz’s assistant when they coached the star-studded Portugal at the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa.

Five years ago, Queiroz once again recruited De Sa to lead the Pharaohs of Egypt. The two coaches led Egypt to the final of the 2021 Afcon, where they lost to Senegal via penalty kicks.

Their next move was in Iran, where they took the country to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

After an impressive showing with Iran, they crossed the Persian Gulf to take over the Qatar national team.

They again reunited in Oman in 2025 with the objective of building the Omani team for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

At club level, besides coaching Orlando Pirates, he was also in charge of Bidvest Wits, Ajax Cape Town, Santos and Platinum Stars. He led the Buccaneers to the final of the 2013 CAF Champions League, where they lost to Egypt’s Al Ahly.

Said De Sa when contacted for comment: “The paperwork from Ghana has not arrived yet. So, I cannot talk about it yet. I should have full confirmation by the weekend. It’s 99%, but you know with these kinds of talks, I just want to be 100% before I talk to the press,” said De Sa.
